Disturbances in lipid metabolism are linked to a multitude of diseases and can either be inborn (e.g. Niemann-Pick disease, Barths syndrome, desmosterolosis) or acquired (e.g. obesity, cirrhosis, HIV-associated lipodystrophy). Lipids have proven to be informative readouts for diagnosis of diseases. They are also frequently analyzed to assess cellular- and systematic health and fitness.
