Lipid Databases
Several comprehensive lipid databases exist. On this page you will find one of them. However, what makes this lipid database unique, is the fact that it easily can be customized to contain only relevant lipids. For instance, bacteria and yeast do not possess poly-unsaturated fatty acids and matching mass-spectrometry data to a comprehensive database will result in many false positives. Likewise, ornithine lipids are only found in a subset of bacteria and many scientist working on eukaryotes will choose to exclude this lipid class from their database. Finally, it should be noted that new lipid classes (such as PT in apicoplasts) are discovered on a regular basis and have not yet been included in most other lipid databases.
This site is actively being developed and within the foreseeable future will let users interactively choose which lipid classes and fatty acids to include in the database to download. SMILES and fragment ions will also be included. For now, we have several databases up for download. Any requests can be directed by email to resources at lipidomics.nl.
